Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha hi/low begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
