Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in almost all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.
While it seems complicated at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi lo provides an overwhelming array of wagering options and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high, along with several battling for the low hand.
