Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he liked betting on various card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play countless hours and lose most times. He earned some additional cash by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he might boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The definite advancement in his abilities began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would often challenge one another. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best women players the poker arena today. He headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played money games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
