Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he loved participating in numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and do not win most times. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and concentrate even more on poker.
The actual advancement in his abilities happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often play against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his logical thinking techniques. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
