Omaha Hi Low: General Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical approach in just about all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at first, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game easily enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting range of betting options and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high, as well as many battling for the low.
